The Primevals \ Sound Hole + Live at the Rex [BOUCD 6633]

Sound Hole is the second album by cult garage rock band The Primevals, originally released in 1986. Now remastered with 6 bonus tracks, the double disc package also includes a bonus live CD recorded at the famous Rex Club in Paris in 1988.

Sound Hole was produced by Richard Mazda (Fleshtones, Scientists). Stand-out tracks include Spiritual, Lowdown and Prairie Chain. "One of our best albums for sure," says frontman Michael Rooney. "The songs were strong and several peaks were hit. There's some kind of chaotic thread which linked the reality of 1980s Glasgow with a mess of far flung ideas and emotions. We definitely punched the anxiety button on Sound Hole." The Primevals marked the release of the album with a six week European tour with The Cramps, along with radio sessions for the likes of John Peel, Janice Long and Andy Kershaw.

Newly remastered in 2015, Disc 1 features 67 minutes of music. Bonus tracks include single b-sides and a radio session from late 1985. Disc 2 features a scorching live performance (18 songs) from the Rex in Paris on 13 April 1988, extracts from which were issued as a vinyl-only album Neon Oven. This is the first time the complete show has been made available.

Reviews:

"The songwriting and performances on the Richard Mazda produced Sound Hole (1986) represent a stellar leap forward and are presented alongside non-album tracks plus a radio session. Live at the Rex, the complete recording of an April 1988 Paris show previously released on vinyl in edited form as Neon Oven, gets its first ever release including as it does inventive reworkings of originals by Captain Beefheart ('Crazy Little Thing'), JJ Light ('Heya') and Swampdog ('Total Destruction To Your Mind') amid a set of sturdy Primevals originals" (Shindig, 06/2015)

"Cult Glaswegian garage rockers repackaged and reissued with additional live and demo tracks. The twin poles of their influences - the swampy roots rock of The Gun Club and the expansive free jazz sax of Pharoah Sanders - put them starkly at odds with most of their Glasgow contemporaries. The Pastels, they weren't" (Q, 08/2015)

"To paraphrase the Shangri-Las, they're prime - but they're not evil. What they also are is positively brooding, verging on Calvinist in their submission to a black, strict reading from the rock 'n' roll bible, underlining chapters headed 'blues', 'country' and 'rockabilly boogie'" (Sounds, 1987)
